A variation of the iconic Kentucky cocktail is just what I needed this summer! Of course you can have it any day, but it is a perfect for Derby Day. This is a cool and refreshing mint julep recipe made with crushed ice, simple syrup, bourbon (well you guessed it from Kentucky), fresh mint and some Puerto Rican Dark Rim for the top!
I will definitely be making various Derby related libations throughout the 2021 Summer!
Ingredients:
- 2oz (60ml) Bourbon
- .5oz (15ml) Simple Syrup
- .25oz (7.5ml) Bacardi Reserve Rum
- 5-10 Julep mint leave plus extra for a garnish. You can use any mint, but I happen to have julep mint in my garden!
Directions:
- In the bottom of a julep cup or rocks glass, place the mint and simple syrup.
- Gently press down on mint leaves with a muddler, making sure not to smash the leaves into oblivion.
- Fill the cup completely with crushed ice, forming a mound on top. (I love to use a Lewis Bag & Mallet to crush my ice. It is a stress reliever too.)
- Pour the bourbon first and then the rum over the top of the ice.
- Garnish with a spring of mint and a straw.
- Enjoy!
