A few week ago my father and I visited Red Brick CraftDistillery. As the name suggests, Red Brick Craft Distillery is found within aclassic Philadelphia red brick building and the entrance is not straightforwardto find and you may feel like you are entering a hidden dungeon. Theiroperation is an intimate affair. The footprint of the distillery is around 1000 feet and the actual tour can be viewed if you just stood in the middle of thesmall room, but that’s part of the charm. I was impressed and engaged theentire time. At the tasting bar, you can (of course!) you can sample theirproducts. That night we tried their Sugar Wash Rum, Single Malt Whiskey, Barrel Strength & From the Woods – Black Birch. Their products where delicious andpacked quit a punch.
The Sugar Wash Rum is a simple clean spirit, which will mix well with anything. Their Single Malt American Whiskey is made from 100% malted barley and aged in new full char American white oak barrels which comes in at 94 proof. If you want to get your butt kicked, try it at full cask strength. It weighs in at a robust 115 proof. Chocolatey, toasty & brown sugary notes are perfectly balanced in their Whiskeys. My surprise was the unique flavor found within From the Woods which was inspired by Pennsylvania Dutch birch beer. It is fermented with wildflower honey, brown sugar and flavored with black birch, is then distilled and aged in their single malt whiskey barrels. I don’t even have to describe the taste. Yes, it tastes exactly like it sounds. My girlfriend advises me to try with eggnog this holiday season. I will take her up on that recommendation. I will post and update and let you know how that goes!
Like I said it is a small, but after the tour we stayed and had a few drinks at the bar and bantered about whiskey and beyond. Needless to say, I picked up a bottle of From the Woods and everyone who has tasted it, has enjoyed it immensely. I will be back in to pick up a few bottled for the holidays!
