Rum on a Rock

As summer fast approaches, instead of a whiskey cocktail or some other manner of drinking whiskey, it is time to show rum some love.

I have a decent collection of sipping rums, and even though it doesn’t come close to rivaling my whiskey collection, it is still solid. If you want to know what sipping rum is, please take a look at my article, “Sipping Rum.”

Just like the Old Fashioned, it is super easy to make – actually even easier as there are only two ingredients! What could those ingredients be you ask? All you need is good rum and Coconut Water! This does take a little time to prep, as you need to freeze the coconut water in a large mold. Fast forward a few hours when the coconut water cubes have frozen completely: now you can begin! Place your large frozen coconut water cube in a rocks glass and top it with your favorite dark, sipping rum. Easy peasy! LOL

I used a high ABV rum by Old Line Spirits, their Old Line Aged Caribbean Rum. It is a single malt, cask-finished at 65% ABV, and barrel pick of Benash Liquors & Wine in Cherry Hill, NJ.

On first taste, there’s a soft, creamy hit of vanilla in the rum. This high-octane rum is the perfect accompaniment to the slowly melting coconut water cube. As the ice melts, the coconut water gradually asserts more of its mellow flavor, and the lingering burn goes down a bit. The coconut water challenges the rum but never overpowers it. It’s great down to the last drop.

I highly recommend grabbing a bottle of high ABV Caribbean Rum and a good coconut water – this is a great Summer drink!

Cheers!
